Arts & Services for Disabled, Inc offers music therapy programs to hospitals that provide a myriad of services. Patients who are hospitalized for an extended period of time and/or who are facing end-of-life or catastrophic health issues can experience an increase in pain, depression, anxiety, apprehension, fear and isolation. The Recreation Therapy, Palliative Care and Neuro-Sciences Departments believe that it is essential to meeting the challenges of hospital Mission and Core Values to address these issues for their most vulnerable patients. To this end Arts & Services in partnership with medical teams aim to expand the services offered to patients in their service areas by integrating a Music Therapy program. Music Therapy as an adjunct therapy has been known to improve medical outcomes including: increasing the patient’s ability to cope, reduction of pain associated with treatment, and an improved quality of the hospitalization stay. In addition Music Therapy provides a quality aesthetic and support for seriously ill and end of life patients and their families. Furthermore, Music Therapy promotes stress reduction, therefore, improving the healing process and reducing the recovery time for patients.
The Recreation Therapy, Palliative Care, Oncology and Neuro-Sciences Departments in local medical center that are interested in instituting the ACCESSIBLE MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAM in conjunction with Arts & Services for Disabled should contact our main office for more information. We have several community partnerships including The Chao Family Cancer Medical Center, and UCI Medical Center funded by PacificLife and The Green Foundation; Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank, CA, pending an endowment.

The purpose and anticipated end result of this program may include but is not limited to:

  • Goal – Music Therapy intervention will enhance and promote the health, recovery and well-being of patients receiving medical treatments and procedures. It will also ease the physical, psychosocial and spiritual suffering of patients and their families nearing or at the end of life.

  • Outcome: The patient participating in the Music Therapy program will experience a sense of well being and recovery and/or increased quality of life during and after his/her music therapy session(s).

  • Goal— The patient receiving ongoing Music Therapy intervention will be able to reduce his/her level of stress associated with hospitalization and health issues.

  • Outcome: The patient or family of a dying patient will be able to express a decrease in his/her level of stress thus decreasing perceived high levels of pain, depression, anxiety, apprehension, fear and isolation.
